It is the study and development of ethical frameworks and guidelines that can be used to judge whether an act is right or wrong. Although it is informed by metaethics, the different normative schools are not directly related to any given metaethical philosophy. ‘Normative ethics’ is an enormous field. It is concerned with the articulation and the justification of the fundamental principles that govern the issues of how we should live and what we morally ought to do. The article tries to inquire a third way in normative ethics between consequentialism or utilitarianism and deontology or Kantianism. To find such a third way in normative ethics, one has to analyze the elements of these classical theories and to look if they are justified.
